One of the activities I regularly participate in is hosting the South Dade Chamber’s podcast, “South Dade Shout Out,” where I interview chamber members to discuss what they do, how they impact our community, and help make South Dade the best place to “Live, Work, Play, and Thrive.” I feel I’ve gradually been improving as a host. It’s fun, and I have the opportunity to really get to know so many wonderful business owners and community leaders. I’ll go back and bring some of those stories to you in the next few weeks.
Last week, I had the chance to visit with my friend and fellow board member, Frank Rosa, co-founder of Florida Solar Partners, a solar-power company dedicated to helping homes and businesses “go solar” with as little stress as possible. In addition to being a business owner, Frank and his partner Seth Requena are ambassadors focused on spreading the word about the benefits of going solar. During the interview, we touched on how much better received the industry is now compared to its early days. We also learned some surprising facts. For instance, states like Maine are far ahead of Florida in terms of the proliferation of solar panels, debunking the myth that solar power is too weather-dependent.
On average, Florida receives 4,859 kilojoules of solar energy per square meter each year, while Maine only receives 3,815 kilojoules per square meter each year (source: [World Population Review](https://worldpopulationreview.com/state-rankings/sunniest-states)). Despite receiving significantly less sunlight than Florida, Maine has more readily embraced solar power. Frank points out that our utility bills in Florida are lower than in many other states, but there are still many reasons to go solar.
Economic benefits abound, and there are numerous green energy incentives making the initial investment much lower, enhancing the cost benefits. The environmental benefits are, of course, top of mind for many. Additionally, there’s the interesting aspect of being part of a community that is (mostly) off the grid. I find it all very intriguing.
